New Research Commission.
Sustainability in Outdoor Arts | GCDN
Kerbside are excited to announce that we have been appointed by the Global Cultural Districts Network (GCDN) as the Principal Investigator on a new Sustainability in Outdoor Art Commissions Research Project. The research will draw on the wide and diverse network of partners within the GCDN.
The project will consider how concerns of sustainability, environmental impact, and climate resilience are having an effect on arts programming in public space. It will investigate the innovative new practices being undertaken by case studies across the globe, looking at how commissions are aiming to embed socially and environmentally sustainable practices throughout the entire life cycle of art commissions. And it will share the knowledge that has been gained through the case studies with others, to increase awareness of best practices, and to highlight efforts to mitigate against challenges. The project aims to champion sustainable development in the arts and culture sector and public realm design and to create a community of practitioners in the field to share their experiences and work collaboratively.
As a Collective, Kerbside works to produce publicly-available research with an aim to push the implementation of sustainability measures forward in a collaborative, practical and transparent manner. We work to ensure that our research can become a platform for districts around the world to share their experiences, learn from each other, and find common solutions. We see artistic programming, the power of narrative, and community-led practices as means that the creative industries have at their disposal to contribute to the often-overwhelming task of working to quell the climate crisis.
The work follows on from the project that we completed for the City of London Corporation in partnership with GCDN, ‘Sustainable Development in Cultural Districts: A Public Realm Perspective’ that can be accessed here.
The Global Cultural Districts Network (GCDN) is committed to improving the quality of urban life through the contribution of the arts, culture, and creative industries. GCDN brings together policymakers, planners, and leaders from around the world, all working at the intersection of culture and sustainable urban development through convenings, research and collaboration.
